DJ K-Works – ‘Maximum’ music video from Illergic’s Illville album

This is a video I did for DJ K-Works for his DJ track from Illergic’s album ‘Illville’. It was shot on the same day as another Illergic music video ‘Ready Aim Fire’, which at this moment in time I’m still to edit. We’d shot ‘Ready Aim Fire’ during the day, and ‘Maximum’ at night. Illergic couldn’t make it along for this one, as he had to work.

For the location of this video we didn’t really have a plan. I had a rough idea that we could shoot it in Broadway car park near the city. They give you 3 hours of free parking there. As it turns out, everything worked out perfectly. We went to the back of the yellow 2nd level of the car park, and since it was during a Saturday night with hardly any shops open, the car park was quite empty. I was lucky to also find a power socket to plug the gear into, which was a real bonus. We set up, shot the video, and were out of there by the time our free 3 hours of parking was up.

At the time, I still only had the one lens for the Sony NEX5N that I shot this with. The Nikon to NEX adapter I’d ordered still hadn’t arrived yet, and neither had the Fujian f1.7 35mm lens from eBay. For the macro shots though, I was lucky to have some 46mm close up filters that I had originally bought years earlier for my Canon HV20. The sole 16mm F2.8 lens I had for this shoot has a 46mm filter thread, so it was a perfect fit. From memory I used either two or all three of those adapters to get the focus close enough. And they worked nicely enabling the details on the turntables and mixer to be seen quite clearly.

Editing was a bit more intricate than normal with all the edits to the cuts. For the moving crossfader parts, I’d shot it as a series of photos, so it was essentially stop motion. Playing around with a few of the shots speeding them up or slowing them down was fun too.

For the colour grade I just used the Color Curves plugin and tweaked it until I got the look I was after. As normal I’ve included a few ‘before and after’ shots below.
