LC McKenzie – ‘Less Than Zero / On My Own Level’ music video
A video here I travelled to Newcastle to shoot for LC Mckenzie. Although it’s actually 2 videos in one.
For ‘Less Than Zero’, the intro, we decided to keep it fairly simple. Since it was a short video, I thought it would be fun to shoot the whole thing with the camera locked off on the tripod. It actually didn’t work too bad, although the closer he got to the camera, the more his head disappeared from view. But I figured that actually looked quite interesting, so I went with a shot where only his mouth could be seen. I matched up the colours between the various clips the best I could in the time I had, and then finished it off with a slight vignette around the outside.
With the 2nd song, ‘On My Own Level’, I found that using my old Nikon lenses provided a nice look there too. I put a variable ND filter on the lenses and got quite a few nice shots. We finished off with a walking take, and then a bunch of random cutaway shots which all looked quite nice.
For the colour grading, I ended up desaturating the video slightly. I had the New Blue Color Fast plugin on there, which managed to bring out more of the blue in the skies. Well, at least in those shots where there was a tiny amount of blue sky visible. But yeah, I’m quite happy overall with how the colours turned out. You can view a few before and after examples below.
And lastly, here’s a screen shot of the Sony Vegas project below.
